for the 2003 Strawberry Jam & Toast to the Arts!

Josh Hano, a senior at Ponchatoula High School, topped out six other entries to become the artist of the official Strawberry Jam & Toast to the Arts poster for 2003.

Josh's poster of reds and dark greens features two musicians, one producing a stream of strawberries from his trumpet.  "I wanted the strawberries to flow like music, to become music," Josh saidin explaining his idea. "The repetition of the musicians in the background seem to keep up the beat of the music. They are the spirit of the Jam party."

The design is balanced by a second musician, a bass player in the foreground, resembling Spider Austin of the Porch Rockers, a popular Ponchatoula band.  "He just seemed to fit."

The poster is a limited edition of 250 signed and numbered silk-screenprints and will be available for purchase the day of the Jam, Saturday, March 22, at a cost of $15.

The poster contest, co-sponsored by the Ponchatoula High School Art Department and the Strawberry Jam Board, was part of a four week unit in art marketing and poster design. Instructor Kim Howes Zabbia offered it to her advanced students in Art III & IV and they competed with posters for the Jam, the Strawberry Festival, and the Quilt Expo.

Josh, 18, is the son of Gina Desormier. He is currently a senior in Art III and plans to pursue a career in animation upon graduation.
